The short answer: an IV drip is sterile fluid, usually saline, with vitamins, minerals and antioxidants added to it. Delivered directly into the bloodstream, it rehydrates quickly and replenishes nutrients without going through digestion. IV therapy became popular quickly, and the explaining did not always keep up. Here is a clear look at what is in a drip, what each ingredient does, and when it is the right call.
What's actually in a typical drip?
At its foundation, a drip is sterile fluid, usually normal saline or lactated Ringer's, with selected additives. The common ones:
- Electrolytes such as sodium, potassium, magnesium and calcium, which govern hydration, nerve signalling and muscle function.
- B-complex vitamins, central to how your cells convert food into usable energy.
- Vitamin C, an antioxidant that supports normal immune function and collagen formation.
- Glutathione, an antioxidant your body produces naturally.
- Specialty add-ins such as zinc or extra magnesium, chosen for the protocol.
Different drips emphasise different combinations. We build yours around your history and what you are trying to address, rather than handing you a menu.
How does IV delivery differ from taking a supplement?
It reaches the bloodstream directly, which produces higher circulating levels than the same nutrient taken by mouth.
Vitamin C is the clearest illustration. Absorption from the gut is tightly regulated, so oral doses plateau at plasma concentrations below roughly 300 micromolar no matter how much you take. Given intravenously, concentrations can reach up to 20 millimolar because the infusion bypasses that regulation (National Cancer Institute). A pharmacokinetic study in healthy volunteers found intravenous dosing produced plasma levels many times higher than the maximum tolerated oral dose (Padayatty et al., Annals of Internal Medicine).
The practical upshot is that an IV works quickly and does not depend on your digestion cooperating, which matters when you are unwell, travelling, or dealing with an absorption issue.
When does a drip make the most sense?
The strongest cases are the straightforward ones.
- Acute dehydration from illness, travel, heat or hard training. Fluid and electrolytes are exactly the right tool.
- Documented absorption issues, where oral supplementation genuinely has not been enough.
- Replenishing a measured deficiency, guided by labs rather than guesswork.
- Recovery support around a demanding training block or a busy stretch.
We test where testing helps. If your levels are the question, a blood panel answers it more precisely than a standing appointment, and it tells us what to put in the bag.
Who is on hand while you're treated?
Both owners of the practice are board-certified Family Nurse Practitioners, and a licensed clinician reviews your history before anything is infused. In Virginia, a delegating nurse must be satisfied a task can be performed safely and retains responsibility and accountability for the care (18VAC90-19-250).
It is a fair question to ask anywhere you receive an infusion, and we are glad to answer it.
Tell us first if any of these apply
A short conversation before your first drip makes sure the formula suits you. Let us know if you have:
- Kidney or heart conditions, including anything affecting how you handle fluid volume.
- A history of kidney stones, which shapes whether high-dose vitamin C belongs in your bag.
- G6PD deficiency, a common inherited enzyme difference that we screen for before high-dose vitamin C.
- Any electrolyte abnormality, so magnesium and potassium are dosed to your labs.
- Pregnancy or breastfeeding, where we take a more conservative approach.
- Any current medication or active treatment, including a medical weight loss program.
None of these is automatically a no. They shape what we choose and how we run it.
What a drip is not
Worth setting expectations, because it makes the tool more useful rather than less.
A drip supports hydration and nutrient repletion. It is not a substitute for sleep, food or addressing an underlying cause. If low energy keeps returning, the more productive conversation is usually about hormones, thyroid or sleep, and we can run that investigation in the same practice.
A drip is a tool. It works best inside a plan.
