Swelling and tenderness 1–2 weeks
Lift right away · collagen builds over 2–3 months
Threads dissolve in ~6 months · results often 12–18 months
A lift without an incision.
PDO (polydioxanone) is an absorbable suture material surgeons have used for decades. In a thread treatment, fine PDO threads are placed beneath the skin through a needle or cannula, with no incisions and no stitches on the surface. Over roughly six months the body absorbs the thread, and in its place leaves the collagen it prompted the tissue to build around it.
There are two families of thread, and they do different jobs. Smooth (mono) threads are placed in a mesh to stimulate collagen and firm the skin: fine lines, crepey skin, the neck, the knees. Barbed lifting threads have tiny cogs that catch the tissue so it can be repositioned: the jowls, the mid-face and cheeks, the brow, the jawline, and the neck.
The result is a subtle lift and a firmer, better-supported face. It is not a facelift, and we don't present it as one. It suits early to moderate laxity; heavier sagging needs surgery, and we'll tell you if that's what we see.
At Colonial Aesthetics, PDO threads are performed by Trisha “Trish” Spence, RN, CANS, a Certified Aesthetic Nurse Specialist who spent more than a decade working alongside plastic surgeons and has mentored other nurses in advanced techniques, procedural safety, and complication management. Thread placement is anatomy work; that background is the point.
Honest framing: threads are a planning decision, not an impulse. Where volume loss is the real problem, a biostimulator or Renuva may give a better answer than a lift. Where the skin itself is loose, radiofrequency tightening may come first. The consultation sorts that out.
Offered at Colonial Aesthetics & Wellness, 1309 Jamestown Rd Ste 204, Williamsburg, VA, serving Yorktown, Newport News and James City County.
What to expect.
How a PDO Threads visit runs, from the days before to the days after. Your provider walks you through all of it at the consultation.
Before
Skip blood thinners (ibuprofen, fish oil, alcohol) for several days if your prescriber agrees. Arrive without makeup. Plan two weeks before any event; threads swell and can bruise.
During
We photograph, map the vectors, and numb with local anesthetic. Threads are placed through a fine needle or cannula and, for lifting threads, gently tensioned. Expect 45–90 minutes depending on the areas.
After
Swelling, tenderness, and some tightness for one to two weeks; possible bruising and small dimples that settle. Sleep on your back, avoid wide mouth movements, dental work, and facials for about two weeks. The lift is visible right away; the collagen result builds over two to three months.
