FAQs

What areas can be treated?
IPL can be done on most parts of the body, including the face, chest, neck, hands, arms, and legs.

Is IPL suitable for all skin types?

IPL is generally most effective for individuals with lighter skin tones (Fitzpatrick skin types I-III) because it targets pigmentation and blood vessels beneath the skin's surface. For darker skin tones (Fitzpatrick skin types IV-VI), IPL may not be as suitable because the treatment can inadvertently target the higher levels of melanin in the skin, increasing the risk of hyperpigmentation, burns, or scarring.

How Many Treatments Will I Need?
We recommend 3 sessions spaced 4-6 weeks apart for best results.

Does it hurt?

IPL is generally well-tolerated and not considered painful by most patients. However, the sensation during the treatment can vary depending on individual pain tolerance, the area being treated, and the intensity of the settings used. During the procedure, you may feel a quick, snapping sensation on the skin, often compared to the snap of a rubber band. Some people describe it as a mild stinging or warming sensation.

How long does each session take?
Treatment times vary depending on the size of the area being treated.

When will I see results?

You may begin to notice some improvement in your skin within a week or two after your first IPL treatment. Dark spots and pigmentation may appear darker initially as the targeted pigment rises to the surface. This is a normal part of the process and indicates that the treatment is working. Over the next few days to weeks, the darkened spots will flake off or fade away, revealing clearer and more even-toned skin underneath. Redness from broken capillaries may also diminish as the blood vessels are absorbed by the body.

Are the results permanent?

The benefits of IPL can last for several months to a year, especially if you maintain a good skincare routine and protect your skin from sun exposure. Periodic maintenance treatments may be required to keep your skin looking its best.

Is there any downtime?
IPL requires no downtime, allowing you to return to normal activities immediately after treatment.

Is IPL safe during pregnancy or breastfeeding?
IPL is not recommended during pregnancy or breastfeeding.

Pre-Treatment Guidelines

  • Avoid sunburns and tans 14 days before treatment.

  • Avoid UV exposure and sunless tanning products 7 days before your treatment.

  • Avoid irritant topical agents 3 days before treatment, such as retinol, glycolic acid, hydroquinone, and exfoliating scrubs.

  • Chemical peels and other laser procedures should not be done within 2 weeks of your treatment.

  • To reduce risks of bruising, avoid blood thinners, alcohol, and aspirin 3-5 days before treatment.

  • You cannot be treated with a laser if you have used Accutane or similar products within the last 6 months.

  • Come to your appointment with clean skin. No lotions or serums on treatment areas.

What to Expect

  • A sunburn-like sensation is expected with possible mild swelling and/or redness. This usually lasts 2 to 24 hours but can persist up to 72 hours.

  • Treated brown lesions usually darken after treatment and mild crusting will begin to form within a few days. This crusting usually resolves in one to three weeks. It should be allowed to flake off naturally.

  • If significant crusting occurs beyond the normal flaking of the treated lesions, an over-the-counter antibiotic ointment such as Polysporin may be used.

Post-Treatment Instructions

  • If you experience any discomfort, redness, or swelling, you can apply cool compresses to the treated area for relief.

  • Do not pick or scratch the areas, as this could lead to scarring.

  • Bathe or shower as usual. Treated areas may be temperature-sensitive.

  • Drink plenty of water to help your skin heal and flush out any impurities.

  • Refrain from strenuous exercise or activities that may cause excessive sweating for 24 hours.

  • Makeup may be applied after 24 hours.

  • Avoid sun exposure and tanning beds to treated areas for at least two weeks post-treatment.

  • Daily broad-spectrum sunscreen with at least SPF 30 should be used for at least two weeks.

  • Avoid hot showers, saunas, hot tubs, or any activity that may cause excessive heat in the treated area for 48 hours.

  • Avoid any irritants to your skin, such as any products containing Tretinoin, Retinol, Benzoyl Peroxide, Glycolic/Salicylic Acids, Astringents, or Vitamin C for seven days after your treatment.
